FORTRESS
WALES 2016
Over the Bank
Holiday
weekend,
Rolling
Thunder
attended their
first event of
the year at
The Fortress
Wales
Show,
Caldicot
Castle
Monmouthshire,
UK.
We had a very
good turn out
of members
from all over
the UK and
many of our
new members
also attended
for their
first event
with us.
A large
encampment was
built with a
guard tower,
tents,
vehicles,
weapons store
etc etc.
Also our
resident peace
protestor set
up outside the
perimeter
entrance
trying to
enroll members
of the public
into
the Anti-war
movement.
We had a good
selection of
vehicles
attending the
event large
and small,
including a
quad .50
Guntruck,
Fuel
tanker, M38 A1
and M151 Mutt.
The M49 fuel
Tanker and the
M151 A1 Mutt
made their
first
appearance at
a event for
over 7 years.
Both vehicles
will be
attending more
events in the
future and the
M49 is a work
in progress
with
improvements
and
alterations
planned for
this year.
Thanks go to
the Burton
family for
getting these
vehicles back
on the road
after a long
absence.
Another
vehicle new to
RT and a first
time to the
Fortress show
is Bill
Hembery newly
restored M109
workshop truck
and what a
great job he
has done to
it. Probably
the best one
on the show
scene. There
are only a
handful of
these trucks
in the UK and
RT are lucky
to have a
second one in
the Motorpool
that is a long
term
restoration
project.
On both days
we took part
in a battle
re-enactment
with the
correct
weapons and
pyrotechnics
to give the
general public
a better
understanding
of the
equipment,
vehicles and
weapons used
during a
combat
situation. The
public enjoyed
what we had
done with a
lot of
questions
being asked by
them on our
return back to
the display.
Our CIA man
was also there,
and we have
photos to prove
it despite that
fact that he
will deny it!
Looking
at the photos,
they must have
been some dodgy
dealing going on
with a CIA paid NVA spy.
More photos
of our troops
RT was awarded
by the
organisers
"Best
Re-enactment
Group Display"
so thank you
to them and a
big thank you
to all the
members who traveled
to
the event and
made it such a
successful
weekend.
First Show of
the Year,
First award of
the Year, now
that's got to
be good
Special
thanks must
go to Phil
and Gerv and
the Members
of Charlie
2\7 for all
their hard
work and
effort
before,
during and
after this
event. Their
hard work
really paid
off as they
were awarded
by the
organisers
"Best
Re-enactment
Group
Display 2016",
so a big
thank you to
them and a
big thank
you to all
the other
members of
Rolling
Thunder who traveled
to the event
and made it
such a
successful
weekend.
Special thanks
also to Vee
vee who traveled
all the way
from Belgium
to attend the
show a round
trip of 676
miles so a big
thank you to
her.
